New Poems from Southend Poetry Group

The new anthology demonstrates the range of talent in the group. Since the first collection was produced in 1985, when Essex Countryside magazine reviewed the pamphlet under the caption 'Southend's Bright Spirits,' the group has published a collection each year containing work by writers active in the area.

This latest booklet includes poems by 28 writers, including Derek Adams, whose collection Everyday Objects, Chance Remarks has recently been published by The Littoral Press (, and local historian Ian Yearsley, whose new poetry collection Tears of Poignancy is also available from the author (

The group has now published over 900 poems by more than 80 writers, a remarkable record of consistency for a local poetry group. With several writers making their first appearance in this year’s anthology, the group maintains its tradition of bringing new talent together with some of the more widely published Southend poets.

Just 3 poets, Mervyn Linford, Adrian Green and former BBC Essex poet Katie Mallett have been represented in every issue since 1985. The annual publications provide the group's writers with a platform in print, and readers with a view of the breadth of talent in the area.

The group, which meets at 8.00pm on the first Wednesday of each month in the Naval and Military Club, 20 Royal Terrace, Southend on Sea, welcomes anyone who has an interest in poetry to come along to one of their meetings.
